After-School Safety Matters

Extending Safety Beyond the School Day

Afternoons and evenings can bring a new set of challenges for kids. Whether they’re in after-school care, youth programs, or simply spending time with friends, it’s important they have the skills to recognize danger and protect themselves in every environment.

After-School Safety Matters (ASSM) is a comprehensive, evidence-informed prevention program designed specifically for youth in out-of-school time programs. Developed by the Monique Burr Foundation and implemented by ECHO, ASSM builds on the core lessons of child safety and expands them into the places where many children spend their afternoons.

What Makes This Program Different?

While school-based programs are vital, children also need protection and awareness outside traditional classrooms. ASSM reaches kids during after-school hours—when they’re participating in clubs, sports, community groups, or simply hanging out.

The program covers:

  • Physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect
  • Bullying and cyberbullying
  • Online safety and digital awareness
  • Recognizing unsafe situations in group and unstructured settings
  • Speaking up and seeking help from trusted adults

Learning That Sticks

ASSM uses engaging, hands-on activities and real-life scenarios to help kids internalize safety lessons. Whether they’re working on art, playing a sport, or just talking with peers, they begin to see how the safety rules apply everywhere—and how they can look out for themselves and each other.

Why It Matters

Unsupervised time doesn’t have to mean unsafe time. ASSM reinforces the message that kids have the right to be safe—everywhere. It empowers them with tools, confidence, and a voice. When kids are equipped with this knowledge, they’re more likely to speak up, ask questions, and stay aware.
